Abstract

1960년대 및 1970년대의 파독간호사에 대한 사회학적, 노동경제학적 고찰은 상당히 있으나 정작 간호학적 의의나 간호역사를 되짚어 본 간호학적 관점에서의 연구는 거의 없다. 따라서 본 연구는 “파독간호사가 경험한 삶은 어떠한가?” 라는 연구 질문 하에 파독간호사들의 삶의 의미를 간호학적으로 조명해 보고자 시도되었다. 연구의 방법은 그룹 면담과 개인 면담을 적용한 질적 연구이다. 연구 참여자는 파독간호사 10명으로서 세 개의 그룹 즉, 파독사업 초기에 취업하였다가 계약만료와 함께 한국으로 돌아온 그룹 3명(A1-3), 현재까지 독일에서 살고 있는 간호사들로서 세계 한민족 여성 네트워크(KOWIN)의 참석자 중 일부인 그룹 4명(B1-4), 그리고 파독되었다가 국내로 역이주하여 남해시 독일마을에 정착한 그룹 3명(C1-3)이다. 자료 수집은 2009년 2월부터 9월까지 3회의 그룹 면담과 개인 면담을 통해 이루어졌으며 면담 필사본, 현장 노트, 메모 등을 Agar(1980)의 분석단계에 따라 분석하였다. 연구 결과 파독 간호사들의 삶은 ‘삶에 도전하기’, ‘새로운 삶을 껴안기’, ‘삶에 의미 부여하기’로 도출되었다. ‘삶의 도전하기’는 가부장제하에서 여성의 전문직 진출이 어렵던 1960년대에 간호사로서 만족하지 않고 해외진출의 기회를 과감히 선택한 파독간호사들의 삶에 대한 태도를 보여주는 것이었으며 ‘희망’과 함께 ‘두려움’이 그들의 감정을 대표하였다. ‘새로운 삶을 껴안기’는 독일에 도착한 간호사들이 겪게 되는 새로운 문화와 세계에 대한 ‘놀라움과 부러움’과 함께 고향을 그리워하는 ‘외로움과 설움’으로 나타났다. 또한 ‘삶에 의미 부여하기’는 국가에 큰 기여를 했다는 ‘자부심’과 더불어 자신들의 삶에 대한 정당한 평가가 이루어지지 않았다는 ‘아쉬움’이 그 속성으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 국내에서는 처음으로 파독간호사의 삶의 경험에 대한 간호학적 평가를 제시하였다. 본 연구결과를 토대로 파독간호사에 대한 간호학적 평가를 심도있게 수행 할 수 있는 후속연구가 필요하다

Purpose: While there exist a good number of studies on Korean nurses who were dispatched to Germany in 1960s and 1970s in sociological or labor economic perspectives, there have been few studies on their experiences from a nursing perspective. The purpose of this study is to recapture their lives and experiences from a nursing point of view.
Methods: This paper adopts an Agar’s ethnographic approach which is more suitable to investigate personal qualitative experiences of those Korean nurses. The data were collected from group discussion and individual interview, and field observation with 10 dispatched Korean nurses.
Results: The experiences of those dispatched nurses to Germany can be summarized into three themes: challenging to life, embracing new life, and giving a meaning to life. Challenging to life involved ’hope and anxiety,’ and embracing new life was reflected by ’wonderment and envy’ and ’loneliness and sorrow.’ Lastly, they took pride in their contributions to their mother country and also felt something lacking that they had not been properly evaluated.
Conclusion: By rediscovering their lives and experiences from a nursing perspective, this study argues for more future studies to reexamine their impact and contribution to the nursing field in Korea.
